Local SEO Checklist for UK Businesses

Local SEO is how a business with a physical location, or a defined service area, shows up when someone searches "[service] near me" or "[service] in [town]." It's mostly free to do yourself — it just takes doing properly, and doing it in the right order. Here's the checklist, in the order it actually matters.

1. Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile

This is the single highest-impact thing on this list and it's free. Claim your listing at business.google.com, then fill in every field: category (pick the most specific accurate one, plus relevant secondary categories), service area or address, opening hours, phone number, website, and a real description. An incomplete profile is the most common reason a genuinely good business doesn't show up in the local map pack.

2. Get your NAP consistent everywhere

NAP = Name, Address, Phone number. It needs to match, exactly, across your website, your Google Business Profile, and any directory you're listed on (Yell, Bing Places, Facebook, industry-specific directories). Inconsistency — "Ltd" on one, missing on another; a slightly different phone format — makes it harder for Google to confidently confirm you're a real, single business.

3. Build genuine location pages, not doorway pages

If you serve more than one town or region, each area deserves a real page with specific, useful content about serving that area — not the same paragraph with the town name swapped out ten times. Thin, duplicated location pages tend to actively hurt rather than help.

4. Get reviews, and actually respond to them

Ask happy customers directly — most won't leave a review unprompted, but will if asked at the right moment (right after a good outcome). Respond to every review, good and bad; a business that visibly engages with feedback reads as more trustworthy to both customers and to Google.

5. On-page basics: title tags, headings, and one clear page per service

Each core service should have its own page with a clear H1, a title tag that includes the service and your location, and content that actually explains the service rather than just naming it. This also matters for GEO/AEO — AI answer engines pull from pages that clearly and directly answer a specific question, not vague overview pages.

6. Get listed on relevant UK directories and citation sources

Beyond Google — Bing Places, Yell, Checkatrade/industry-specific directories where relevant, your local Chamber of Commerce if you're a member. Each consistent, legitimate citation reinforces that you're a real, established business.

7. Local link building — genuinely, not spammed

A mention or link from a local news site, a supplier, a trade association, or a local business you've genuinely partnered with carries real weight. Paid link schemes and directory-spam links generally don't — and can actively cause problems.

How long this takes to show results

Google Business Profile changes can show movement within weeks. On-page and citation work is typically a 2–4 month process before you see meaningful ranking movement, and it's ongoing — not a one-off task you finish and forget. That's why our Professional and Business plans include this as continuous monthly work rather than a one-time setup fee.
