How Much Does a Website Cost for a UK Small Business?

"How much does a website cost" doesn't have one answer, because a website isn't one thing — a static five-page brochure site and an e-commerce store with 200 products and a booking system are both "a website" but cost completely different amounts to build and run. Here's what actually drives the price, so you can work out what you actually need before you ask for a quote.

The three real cost bands

DIY builders (Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy) — roughly £10–£30/month. You do the design work yourself using templates. Fine for a very simple presence, but you're doing the SEO, the content updates and the troubleshooting yourself, and template sites tend to look and perform like template sites.

Managed small-business plans — roughly £150–£450/month. A developer builds a custom site to your brief, and the monthly fee covers hosting, updates and ongoing SEO work rather than a one-off handover. This is where most UK small businesses that actually want results land — you get a professionally built site without a five-figure upfront bill, and someone accountable for keeping it working and ranking.

Bespoke/agency builds — £5,000–£50,000+ upfront, plus hosting and maintenance. Custom software, complex integrations, multi-location or franchise setups. Worth it when your requirements genuinely are custom; overkill for most single-location small businesses.

What actually drives the price within each band

  • Number of pages and content types — a 5-page site and a 40-page site with a blog aren't the same job.
  • E-commerce vs. brochure — payment processing, stock management and order handling add real complexity.
  • Custom design vs. template — a design built for your brand takes longer than adapting an existing template.
  • SEO scope — basic on-page setup is quick; ongoing content, local SEO and link-building is recurring work, which is why it's usually billed monthly rather than as a one-off.
  • Ongoing changes — if you'll need regular updates (new products, new pages, seasonal changes), that needs to be priced in as an ongoing service, not a one-off build fee.

The question to ask instead of "how much"

Ask "what does this need to actually do for my business in 12 months" — get customers to call, sell products online, rank for local searches, look credible to a buyer checking you out before a meeting. The honest cost conversation starts there, not from a generic price list.

What we charge, and why it's monthly

Our own plans start at £199/month for a custom responsive site with hosting, SSL and basic SEO included, up to £599+/month for multi-location builds with custom SEO/GEO strategy and AI automation. We bill monthly rather than a big upfront fee because a website isn't a one-off deliverable — it needs updating, and it needs ongoing SEO work to actually rank, and a flat monthly fee means that's built in rather than a separate invoice every time something needs doing. No fixed-term contract either way — see the full breakdown on our pricing page.
